Bay Area producer/artist N.T.P.


Im one of those people who loves music. I wouldn't say I have a "type" because my collection is very diverse, but I would go as far as to say that I am picky. Liking a track the first time I hear it is rare, songs usually have to grow on me. I don't wan't to hear about money, gangs, and cars all the time,  sometimes I want to hear about love, or about just having fun. I have a song to go with any possible emotion that I can ever feel, and I must admit that music often helps me deal with the stress of being a full-time student and doing two internships.

This post is not to ramble about my infatuation with music. I was inclined to blog when I heard "Girl on Me" by N.T.P., an upcoming artist out of the San Francisco Bay Area.  When I heard the song I started dancing in my seat a little bit. I can definitely see this song as a club hit and I'm sure that in no time we'll being hearing it in San Francisco and Los Angeles nightclubs. Im so excited to watch N.T.P. build her brand.

Not only is she an artist, she's a producer and a writer too. She owns her craft and you have no choice but to respect that. Even though "Girl on Me" is a song for the people to have fun to,  N.T.P  is NOT to be written off as one of these new-age artists who make a few club songs but NEVER say anything in their music. Keep a watch out for her and support the movement. I got to hear the song a little early but you'll hear it soon. The people want cupcakes !




My work on a campaign book for a new baking company in the Inland Empire led me to an interesting article published in the Houston Chronicle on cupcakes. It seems random but there’s a point I promise!
 The article talks about how cupcakes have withstood the recession and have proven to make bakeries and chains like Sprinkles popular.
 According to the article, the popularity of cupcakes over other small sweets is explained by different competing theories: nostalgia, aesthetics, and the sheer sweet allure of frosting.
 The article made me think, are cupcakes really that cool? Do we like them that much?  I quickly thought back to summer 2009 when I interned in downtown Oakland at the Mayor’s office. My coworker would always get distracted by her cupcake craving around noon and venture off to Sprinkles’ website to browse their cupcake flavors.  She would then proclaim a weekend trip for the interns to Sprinkles’ Palo Alto location that never actually happened. Our boss must have noticed all the cupcake talk amongst the interns, because toward the end of the summer he walked into the office with two dozen cupcakes, placed them on the table and walked out. I must say, that day the interns where in a cupcake-induced state of euphoria.
The reason this article was published in the Houston Chronicle back in 2009 was partly because of Sprinkles’ arrival to the city. Not only is the Sprinkles chain visited by average working class citizens (like myself), it is often patronized by celebrities and socialites as well, which yields buzz marketing, an effect that many companies pay public relations professionals good money to create. Click here to read about how Barbra Streisand sent the Sprinkles cupcakes to Oprah Winfrey and Oprah was crazy about them and shared them with her studio audience. When Jimmy Kimmel saw the cupcakes on Oprah's show, he stood in line himself for 45 minutes to buy $80 worth of them. When you click there you’ll also read about how Tyra Banks says she's addicted to them and Katie Holmes says just thinking about them makes her salivate. Teri Hatcher served them during a birthday bash for the cast of her hit show, "Desperate Housewives", and fellow cast member Marcia Cross raved about the red velvet cupcakes.
To compliment the fun-sized desserts that offers customers a piece of luxury at a relatively cheap price, Sprinkles is actively engaged in community service. They have donated $1.9 million to charities around the world, they donate cupcakes daily to food banks in local communities, they sold red velvet cupcakes to assist the Red Cross with Haiti Relief, they created custom cupcakes to generate money for cancer research and they have awarded college scholarships to deserving applicants.  

The company does the right thing, is seen doing the right thing, and does not get the two mixed up. They offer delicious cupcakes at a reasonable price and the cupcake craze has afforded them free marketing and free spokesmen. The press clips on their website are amazing and overall, I’d say Sprinkles has some sweet PR going on!!!

A Great Find

In these days and times many people, especially African-Americans, are concerned with the quality of shampoo/conditioner they put in their hair. The search for sulfate-free, paraben-free, petroleum-free products is on the rise and consumers have taken to blogs such as blackhairmedia.com and longhaircareforum.com to see what products are producing results for other people.

On a trip to a local health food store, New Leaf, I came across products from the Pure Life Soap Co. and I decided to try the brand out. I purchased the Rosemary conditioner to use as a deep conditioner every two weeks with the hopes that my transitioning hair would retain moisture from it, which is the problem that moved me to begin my anti-sulfate/paraben/petroleum free tirade in the first place.

The product worked great and I encourage all those people on the product search to not only try the brand, but to also refer to those blogs for advice and suggestions.

I hope that the big companies realize the "buzz" thats going on surrounding organic products and start giving the people what they want. I also encourage people to visit health food stores for great products that are made by smaller companies. I love my Pure Life Soap Co. product and I cant wait to try more.

Public Relations and the Education System

As I sat and watched a screening of "Waiting For Superman," a documentary by Davis Guggenheim I became real emotional. I sat in a theater full of teachers and chamber of commerce members’ and watched in awe at the extent to which our public school system is failing.

I am a product of those “drop-out factories” and failing schools that the filmed talked about, so I know first-hand how it feels to be left behind when the law says that you’re not supposed to be. The difference between me and other students was that I have always had the ability to teach myself and seek help when I was confused. I had people in the community supporting me, such as the volunteers at the Willie B. Adkins Project , who made sure that African-Americans in my community were academically prepared for college. They tutored us on what we were halfway taught, they taught us what we were never taught, and they were those strict parents who let us know failure was not an option.

At the end of the movie, I wondered how I was so different from many of my peers. When I got to high school I knew by the end of my first year that I was going to college when many of my classmates didn’t even know if they were going to 10th grade. I now realize that public relations had a part in my choice to attend a 4-year university without my even knowing it.

Different programs targeted me and kids like me. These programs taught us without that without higher education life would be hard. They used programs such as Upward Bound to feed lower income kids into local universities, and they incorporated college fairs with concerts, cookouts and step shows.

The schools that Willie B. Adkins took us to on our annual out-of-state college tours served as part of a PR tactic. We went to these schools, we talked to students, we ate in college cafeterias, and admissions counselors made sure to spit out all the distinguishing and positive statistics about their institutions as well as successful alumni stories. We were sent the message that education was important and college was a necessity.

My country's public school system might have failed me, but I was lucky. Tactics used by groups, mentors and teachers motivated me to teach myself and sign up for those “hard” teachers (the teachers who actually made you do work).  I bought the dream of living the college experience the first time it was sold to me and I decided that I was not a victim.  Others are not so lucky, as shown in the documentary the public school system is failing and for kids with families like mine, the only other option is charter school, especially since many programs like the one I was in are not receiving as much funding as they used to. When districts struggle financially the after-school programs are usually the first to go.

Popular charter schools use public relations to survive. They market their student success rates in order to gain public trust and anounce official statistics and test rates keep that trust. They prepare kids for college and as the “buzz” of their success spreads more people become interested. Sadly, as interest goes up, the chances of being selected to attend charter school go down.

The fact that charter schools across the nation are having to draw lotteries to determine which students get placed shows that public relations is a part of education now more than ever. Not only are these schools being marketed within the communities that they serve, but also the “buzz” spreads to people in nearby communities and they apply for spots as well. Schools such as the KIPP Charter Schools across the country and the SEED schools in D.C. and Baltimore have received nationwide attention because of their ability to actually educate their students, something that many of America’s public schools cannot do.

At the end of the day, these charter schools are following steps that many public schools cannot because of bureaucracy issues, and those steps are the ones outlined in James Hoggan's book, Do The Right Thing: PR Tips for a Skeptical Public. They are:

1.Do the right thing
2.Be seen doing the right thing
3.Never get #1 and #2 mixed up.

The way that public relations ties into education is so interesting to me. I never realized the tactics used to get me interested in college or the tactics used to motivate the efforts of certain family members to get me into charter school (many of which were sabotaged by me because I was naïve and wanted to be with my friends).

In-N-Out reminds me of the basic PR rules.

In-N-Out. Of course a California girl like me is going to claim that the fast-food chain produces the best burgers in the industry, and judging by the company’s success I am not alone. In-N-Out has always been different from most chains, the food is always fresh and cooked to order, the menu has remained consistent since its beginning and the employees are always nice. Also, the bathrooms are always clean, which is something a person like me appreciates. A dirty bathroom always makes me uncomfortable to patronize a restaurant.

I wanted to know how the company is as successful as other chains when their service area is limited to California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.  From a public relations standpoint, I was curious to know what tactics they used to bring in more revenue than Burger King, and international chain. I researched it and I came across a great article at dailyfinance.com. The article outlined In-N-Out's secrets to success. They were as follows:

1. Keep a relentless focus on quality
2. Listen to your customers
3. Treat employees well
4. Keep things simple and consistent
5. Expand slowly and only under the right conditions
6. Define your own level of success

Stacy Perman’s book In-N-Out Burger: A Behind the Counter Look at the Fast-Food Chain That Breaks All the Rules goes into further detail on the company’s success.

What does the story of In-N-Out have to do with PR ? Everything. Their simple company philosophies and practices remind us that quality and consistency keep consumers happy. Nothing has changed over the years and I know that nothing will. My dad loves In-N-Out because their food is just as delicious as it was in the 70’s when he became a fan. I know that when I walk in I am going to see them cutting fresh potatoes and that fresh lemonade will be waiting for me. People associate the In-N-Out brand with quality and consistency, and I think that anybody going into branding, PR, or marketing should read a little about In-N-Out’s story. 

In-N-Out does the right thing by putting their customer's interests first and maintaing the happiness of employees. In James Hoggan's book, Do The Right Thing: PR Tips for a Skeptical Public, he says that the guiding rules for success are: 1. Do the right thing 2.Be seen doing the right thing 3.Never get rule one and rule two mixed up. When it comes to In-N-Out it seems to me that honesty, quality and consistency helped them follow all of these rules without trying.
